Recruitment is easy, retention is not!

Securing exceptional L&D talent is typically the simple part of the employment process. Retaining them though can be a very different matter.
Of course, you can offer incentives, a boosted salary and perks that may make the eyes water, but in most cases, it’s best to keep things simple.
Here are just five of our suggestions for the mutually beneficial retention of outstanding L&D talent within your business:
1. Develop your L&D teams strengths and embrace their individuality – After all, you employed them and therefore must have seen the sparks of enthusiasm and excitement in their eye from day one. Never lose sight of that, or that the more varied your talented team, the more bases you will cover throughout the entire business.
2. Practice what your preach and secure a strong business culture of learning. Your business has a strong reputation - Own it! Don’t just advertise with the job role that there is endless development and heaps of additional qualifications to be had, show your team that it is encouraged to want to grow, and watch them stay and develop within your business.
3. Create space for real communication, for with real collaboration comes success! Your team of L&D professionals need to know that they can think and speak freely. Afterall, they have the business itself in their hearts. So, you must expect some passion, and you should be ready for the good, as well as on occasion the bad. Humans will, by definition occasionally clash. Make it ok to have differences of opinion and then move on together.
4. Ensure your L&D talent really know their worth and make new opportunities within the business easily accessible. We have covered this already but cannot stress enough that just being good in their currently role will not keep your talent. In fact, you are more likely to lose them to a competitor for the sake of an additional course or your lack of passion for their drive. Think on that and ensure you remind them that they are already part of the best team of talent and that you are right behind them!
5. Get the balance right because happy talent and productive talent are loyal talent! Shake the office hours tree and see what falls out. Provide a better platform for the perfect work life balance and watch your unstressed, very focused, and happy L&D staff thrive within your perfect working environment.
These are just some of the few pointers we use as a starting platform for talent retention within L&D, and I am more than happy to discuss further strategies with you. For more information or to book a confidential chat please contact me: kate@talentmapping.co.uk
